Congrats, AI is now creating music, art, literature, videos, can simulate conversations and is getting better and better at it.
This means that the cost of content creation will drop to near zero, flooding the market with AI-generated stuff, making it a true commodity. It’s already happening, but I bet what will change over time is the quality.
Still, content is meant to be consumed by humans, and the vast majority of us are looking for genuine human experiences, and that desire won’t go away even if (or most likely when) 99% of what we’ll see is AI-generated.
In such a scenario, the demand for truly authentic content will only increase, and sports will be one of the key “beneficiaries” as one of the most powerful (if not the most powerful) forms of it.
AI can replicate or generate many things, but not sports. It’s all about the live drama, the emotional highs and lows of an event, combining of physical skill, mentality and strategy, all multiplied by the unpredictability of human competition.
It is the imperfection of the human ahtletes (especially those you support) that allows the audience to build connection with them and get much deeper emotions during the live events. By now, I can’t imagine how AI can replace this.
AI can (and will) change the way sports are played and consumed, for sure there will be lots of enhancements in training, officiating, broadcasting, there might even appear new sports that were not possible before AI, but the essence of live competition will remain uniquely human.
Going back to the fact that other forms of content are more easily replicable by AI, I can bet that the value of live sports will skyrocket over time – they just carry an emotional and cultural weight that AI content lacks.
