About a year ago, still in Kyiv, at one of the “startup flats” I suddenly realized that I’m not satisfied with all the existing definitions of metaverse. So I gathered my friends to create our own.
After a couple of hours of hot debates we came up with the following:
“Metaverse is a virtual space that eliminates existing limitations”.
I think this definition is flexible enough to cover all the possible incarnations of the metaverse but still clear enough to answer the question “what for?”
This definition made me think about what is the absolute of the metaverse. Since then, I’m constantly thinking about this, and here’s where I came to:
what for do we remove the limitations? To do something we were not able to with these limitations existing;
what is the key limitation of a human being? I bet the thing that makes us humans – death, and the fear of death.
So I think that the absolute of the metaverse not only eliminates limitations, it erases the fear of death.
I’ve written before that survival mode makes it harder for us to create new meanings. And now, imagine a world where beings are free of fear of death and the role of survival is reduced to the next-to-zero level. What could such a collective consciousness create?
Of course, I’m speaking about an absolute, some kind of an unattainable utopia, but still… This thought alone makes me explore the metaverse landscape with doubled enthusiasm.
